Child abuse is a growing concern for law enforcement but one local community made a proclamation today to help raise awareness about this issue problem.

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare reported more than 200 complaints of child abuse in Madison, Fremont, Jefferson, and Teton County.

An estimated 100 cases came from Madison county where a unique type of garden is on display to help raise awareness.

City officials, along with Madison Junior High students, joined together today in making a blue pinwheel garden for child abuse prevention month.

Mayor Shawn Larson, "We are a community and we want to make sure that we are protecting our children and working together so that we don't have this problem."

The Madison County Community Council is sponsoring the pinwheels that each represent two children born in Madison County last year.

These gardens also come just one day after the scary news of a one month old baby who has a skull fracture allegedly caused by his father, Kurt Gum.

Chief Lynn Archibald, "I think its important that the public realizes that this is a problem and it's a problem in every community."

Chief Archibald said they might not have as many cases as other communities but it is a problem on the rise.

Archibald, "We cant turn away from it, we need to address it and realize its here and we all need to join together in fighting this problem."

Out of the estimated 100 abuse cases in Madison County 75 percent were neglect and 25 percent were for physical abuse, but Mayor Larsen and the community council feel even one case is to much.

Mayor Larsen, "We want to make sure that in our community, those individuals that need help. They may be stressed out and may be facing difficult times but they know that there are resources out there."

Mayor Larsen also said the main goal to help parents see that there is help out there. The child protective services in your area are there to look at each report of child abuse and they also offer several family services.
