The man who pleaded guilty to three counts of battery for his role in a violent incident on the side of highway 20 in Jefferson County back in 2007, was sentenced in court Monday.
In court, it was disputed whether or not the term "road rage" applies to this case, and whether the man was trying to make a citizen's arrest, but in the end, Peter Estay will serve 20 days in jail, pay a $1,000 fine, go to anger management, and write a letter of apology.
Jefferson County Prosecutor Robin Dunn called it an outrageous crime that has no excuse. But Teton County man Peter Estay explained it nonetheless, why he wielded a knife on the side of Highway 20 back in 2007.
His son, Peter Michael, has already been sentenced -- five days in jail, two years probation.
Before Estay's sentencing Monday, Estay told the judge that when he and his son saw their missing car being driven in Driggs, they thought it was stolen, so they chased it down Highway 20 with high speeds all the way to Jefferson County.
Robin Dunn, Jeff. Co. prosecutor: "People and eyewitnesses felt their lives were in danger because of the swerving of both vehicles."
When the cars pulled over, Estay admits to slashing the tires so it couldn't get away. His son is said to have attacked Landon Lyle. Estay is said to have stabbed Amy Lyle, but today any actual "stabbing" was disputed. Estay says it was an accident when he was approached from behind while slashing the tires. And both parties today did agree the injury was more of a slight laceration.
As it would turn out, the Lyles had been hired to repossess Estay's car that day in 2007. But even if the car had been stolen, the prosecutor says this case sends a clear message to the public.
Dunn: "The biggest message we'd like to send to society is that you can't take the law into your own hands."
Peter Estay today called himself a victim, and in many ways, he now is. Because after a bizarre twist of revenge two months ago, Landon Lyle was arrested for shooting his gun into Estay's home, with Estay's wife inside.
So while this two-year saga could've drawn to a close with Monday's sentencing, it is still far from over. Lyle is now charged with second degree attempted murder.
Estay must report to jail on June 12th.
