Elderly People Not Necessarily in Highest Risk Category for Contracting Swine Flu

People over the age of 65-years-old, without any major health complications, do not fall into the highest risk category for this particular strain of the flu.

At Quail Ridge in Pocatello, the only person who tested positive for Swine Flu was one of the employees.  That confirmation was determined three months ago and no one else ever got sick at the facility according to the general manager.

The general manager attributes their clean client record to ongoing janitorial practices. Employees always have access to bleach water and a sink with soap and hot water to wash their hands frequently. Rails and door knobs are regularly disinfected and flu testing is conducted by the assisted living center in order to monitor and proactively control the possibility of an outbreak.

On Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration approved the H1N1 vaccine after clinical trials deemed it to be safe for human consumption. Idaho health facilities are still expected to get their allowance of the H1N1 vaccine in October.

Health officials across the nation are still urging people to get their regular flu shot this year.

Early shipments of the seasonal flu vaccine are now available in Idaho. Private providers, retail stores with pharmacies and Idaho public health districts are the ones who have them right now.

Signs have been posted on the walls at Ashley Manor in Chubbuck, kindly asking that if you are sick to come back for a visit when you are not contagious.

How long should you shut yourself in?  It is recommended to stay away from public places for a full 24-hours after breaking a fever.

As far as Swine flu testing goes, doctors and patients can request the test. Take into consideration that the test costs anywhere form $200 to $300.  Health officials say some insurance companies do cover the medical bill but that there is no real benefit to the patient to find out either way because the treatment is exactly the same as the seasonal flu.

Hospitals send specimen samples to the state lab while some private labs conduct their own flu test.  Results are back within two to three days.

Unless you're having troubles breathing or have a child that is unresponsive you are asked to avoid crowding up space at the doctor's office.
