Busiest Day of the Year for Animal Shelters

Posted:

Today marked the busiest day of the year for local animal shelters as dozens of calls came in about missing pets.  The day after July 4th is traditionally a busy day for the shelter because numerous dogs and cats run away from the loud noises and smells associated with fireworks.

Officials at the Pocatello Animal Shelter said they received close to 130 phone calls today from people looking for their missing dogs and cats. They also said this year has not been as busy as previous years, because people are taking better precautions during the holiday weekend.

Cassy Cole, Pocatello Animal Shelter: "I like to think that people are realizing what the fireworks and 4th of July means to an animal versus people. It's fun for us but the animal is looking at us like we're crazy sitting around this thing that is spewing sparks, and smoke and loud noises."

Workers at the animal shelter in Idaho Falls also say they were flooded with calls today, though they only picked up 5 strays.  Bonneville County did pick up a lot more than the city though.

If your dog or cat does go missing it is important to contact your local animal shelter immediately.  Due to overcrowding, dogs and cats can only be held for a few days until they either put up for adoption or are scheduled to be euthanized.
