Games for Grades Add Incentive for Students

Posted:

Most parents have rules like eat your dinner before you get dessert and do your homework or forget free time. Now there's a new program that rewards excelling students with something so sweet they just have to play along.

If school was a video game I'm sure there would be a lot of kids who wouldn't miss a minute of it. While that's not yet a virtual reality, there is an incentive based program called "Games for Grades" that could get the same results.

Nathan Koeller, 13-years-old: "I'd try a lot harder to get good grades, to get a lot more games. Yeah, I think my grades would go up a lot."

Here's how it works, for every earned A students of all ages get a ten percent discount on any used video game. As far as bonus points go, the student's school also receives a ten percent donation based on that purchase. Gamers are held accountable by having to show employees their actual report card.

Lot Adams, Play N Trade Manager: "We're definitely pushing for straight A's, I mean they get rewarded more. School is important. You need to be able to take time out for your homework and be able to get those grades so that mom and dad don't take away your systems and controllers."

Adams also says hand and eye coordination could be a skill children use later on in their life profession. Nathan's mom agrees, saying her son has advanced more rapidly in piano and guitar class because of his time in front of the tube.

Shelley Koeller, Nathan's Mother: "He is a very talented kid and so he's been able to. I've allowed him to do quite a bit with the games."
