2008-2009 Flu Season Thus Far

Posted:

This year's flu season is dramatically different than last year, at least it seems that way. Out of the 50 states, almost half are reporting sporadic activity while the other half are reporting nothing at all.

In order to diagnose the flu, doctors have to perform a test.  Most doctors discard the test and treat the symptoms, making it hard to know exactly what's going on this season.

According to the Center for Disease Control, a low level of the flu was reported for the entire country. Locally, health officials have seen little to no activity and so far nothing's reported. There are people that visit their local doctors with flu-like-symptoms, but it's never diagnosed as the flu. Health officials say this year seems better than last year, but it's still early in the season.

Kelley Tillotson, RN BSN: "A lot of the time when people actually go to their doctor they just treat the symptoms. So it makes it hard to get an accurate amount that is out there."

This week is National Flu Vaccination Week, and it's not too late to get yours done. The South Eastern District Health Department is offering a walk-in clinic on Thursday at the health department. It's Adults only and runs from 1pm to 4pm. The shot cost 15 dollars.
