On guard! Fencing is coming to the schools in Pocatello.
"We wanted to bring in a sport which is available to some parts of the world in our country but not specially in Idaho for these kids, and fencing is a very unique sport, because as you will get to see, it has strength, endurance, and
agility and combine different avenues of physical exercise,” says Fahim Rahin M.D.
The staff at the Academy feel like this will be an important part of the physical education program.
"I think this is a valuable addition to our curriculum, our P.E. curriculum that we have, it's going to be really fun, the kids are very enthusiastic and they have been excited about this assembly since it was announced a couple of weeks ago," According to the Principal of Academy Charter school, Joel Lovstedt.
From Olympic medalist Tim Morehouse's experience, he believes this sport has multiple benefits for the participants.
"Fencing really changed my life when I was a kid, so now that I have had the opportunity to go to three Olympic games and achieve a lot of success personally as an athlete, I want to give back and I think fencing is a great sport, not just because it is a great physical activity, and that it is really important for healthy kids, but also because it is a great tool to help kids achieve in their lives,” Fencing Olympian, Tim Morehouse says.
"It's a sport that is not only good exercise, but it is good mental discipline as well that I think is going to carry over into the other activities that they have in school and in their classes,” added Lovstedt.
