Christmas is just around the corner and many of you have already put up your holiday decorations. One man in east Idaho who specializes in making these decorations is having an open house for all to see.
“Started 25 years ago, just kind of was looking for a hobby and stumbled upon it, started melting pop bottles in the garage and it was just so fascinating I thought I’ve got to try this, you know, decided to buy the right kinds of glass and the right equipment and started off” said Russel Lewis owner of A Touch of Glass.
Now Russel Lewis is making mouth-dropping pieces like these.
He told me about the hardest piece he’s ever made.
“It’s a huge piece of hard glass, and so we worked on it, the wife had to help me, we had to have all the torches going on it and it literally took us days we’d work on it, put it back in the over, keep it hot and we worked on it for just days on end to get that much mass and get it the right shape and the right color and everything” continued Lewis.
The torch can reach up to 3200 degrees.
Lewis wears didymium glasses that help filter out the sodium flare so he can see what he’s doing a lot better.
“It’s a great winter hobby because you’re always warm but other than that it’s just challenging, fun to see what you can make out of a piece of rod” said Lewis.
Lewis is having an open house for the public to show how he does his work.
The open house will be today until 8 p.m. and all day tomorrow.
