The results of a vote at the National Boy Scout Council in Texas on the policy toward gay scouts are in. According to Grand Teton Council Executive Clarke Farrer the measure passed with 61% of leadership voting for the measure. The measure allows openly gay scouts into the organization but still bans gay leaders from serving.

This issue is one that is emotionally charged for one of the nation's oldest youth organizations and its millions of members.

About 1,400 national council members voted at a resort in Grapevine, Texas, not far from BSA's Irving, Texas, headquarters, during the national council's three-day annual meeting.

The outcome is unlikely to end a bitter debate over the Scouts' membership policy. Some conservative churches that sponsor Scout units wanted to continue excluding gay youths, in some cases threatening to defect if the ban were lifted. More liberal Scout leaders -- while supporting the proposal to accept gay youth -- have made clear they want the ban on gay adults lifted as well.

Shortly after the scouts announced this proposed plan the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints endorsed the proposal. Here is the official response from the LDS Church. In a letter this week the Catholic Church indicated it was waiting to see the outcome of the vote before deciding its future involvement but hoped the church's relationship with the scouts could continue. Here is the reaction from the National Catholic Committee on Scouting.

Here is reaction from the Human Rights Campaign.

Here is reaction from the person who founded, a scouting-centered website. John Stemberger called it a "sad day for scouting."

One cannot swear to due one's duty to God or be morally straight and uphold that which is in opposition to the natural functions of the body God created. You have to pick a side... There is no middle postion as allowing a little leaven makes its way through the whole piece of dough...
