The new school year is just around the corner and it's time once again for the 2013 Back 2 School Giveaway Event.
The Back 2 School Event is designed to bring the community together to promote education by providing basic needs and school supplies to area students.
The event director Josh Robinson tells us how the event got started.
"Years ago we just noticed a need in the community and said there is a lot of families and kids that are showing up to school with like a grocery bag and supplies, and having heard some of those stories from school teachers, we got together and said that's a need that we can take care of," says Robinson.
"In fact every year it's grown by fifty to hundred percent, this last year we bumped it up by another 250 for the amount of students that we were expecting, and so as we continue to grow the event we still find that there are people in need in Southeast Idaho that are just having a hard time and can benefit from the services we offer," added Robinson
With the event expanding each year, more services become available for the families.
Robinson states that, "Our goal each year is we're looking at it as to try to make it a completely all inclusive day, so if a family in need showed up, what are all the resources that would help them prepare them for the next school year. So every single year is we're looking at the businesses to invite or who to approach to be a part of the event, that's really our goal."
The community can help by donating money towards the supplies like backpacks, crayons, pencils, notebooks, and they can also help by donating gently used clothing.
Robinson also added that, "And then if there are any businesses that are still out there that would like to be tied to this event, you know we still have about two hundred backpacks that we are still trying to sponsor, and so businesses can come on board and for six dollars a backpack. They can sponsor all the school supplies in that backpack, their name and logo will go right on the backpack itself, and then we will throw them into the bunch of publicity that we have for our businesses."
There are no special qualifications to be able to participate in this back to school event.
"We go kind of on the honor system, anybody in need can show up on August 17th from 10:00 to 1:00 and receive free school supplies, free clothing, visit with doctors, dentists, talk to the fire department, the police department, and have access to the other 15 to 20 businesses that are offering services that day," said Robinson
Josh says this is a way for the community to have a real impact on someone’s life.
"Just to see the smiles on the faces, some parents are in tears when they see all the services and all the things that are provided for their children."
