Another outdoor smoking ban could be on its way to a popular recreation spot. The Blackfoot City Council has begun the early stages of exploring the possibility of a smoking ban at Jensen’s Grove.

From enacting a ban on “spice” to banning texting while driving, the Blackfoot City Council has been ahead of the curve when it comes to protecting its citizens.

“My personal opinion is that we have an outstanding council,” said Mayor Mike Virtue of Blackfoot. “They are practical. They try not to jump to over react but discuss, contemplate, get input on issues and then make the decision based on the facts that they have. Some of those obviously are clear safety issues. Spice and those kinds of things are clearly someone’s attempt to tweak the law a little bit and so we have been proactive.”

The mayor says smoking at Jensen’s Grove has become an issue because it’s difficult to enforce any ordinance when there are inconsistencies on where it’s applied.

“There’s some inherent problems about having a nonsmoking and a smoking, in the same place,” said Mayor Virtue. “It’s pretty difficult to do that. There’s a lot of children’s play equipment and it’s dispersed throughout the park. And so to say this is smoking and this is nonsmoking is pretty difficult.”

Tuesday, a public forum was held to discuss a smoking ban at Jensen’s Grove. The city council decided to table the topic because as the mayor says, “it isn’t much of a problem when it cold and snowy outside.”

The city council will likely make a decision on this in the spring of next year.
