Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. And a single car accident can require as many as 100 pints of blood.

Thursday, a bunch of bikers from the POW*MIA Awareness Association donated blood.

“I’m so very grateful to all the individuals that come in and take their time, they are taking their lunch hours, doing whatever it takes to be able to give the gift of life,” said Jennifer Bowen of the POW*MIA Awareness Association.

Every 20 minutes, someone in the Gem State is in need of blood. Odds are you or someone you know will need donated blood in your lifetime. In fact half the population will need this service at some point in their life. Which means keeping the blood banks full is critically important, especially this time of year.

“It’s very much an important time of year,” continued Bowen. “And because of the holidays, there are fewer days to be able to draw blood.”

Approximately 40 percent of the nation’s blood supply comes from the American Red Cross. Donated blood is most commonly used in treating people of have been in accidents, cancer patients and for premature babies.

“We have blood drives at least five days a week here in southeast Idaho and sometimes six days a week,” said Liz Jordan of the Red Cross. “We try to bring in, in the state of Idaho, close to 250 units a day just to keep up with demand.”

Blood cannot be manufactured and that is one of the reasons it's so important for people to donate throughout the year.
