About 400 people gathered in Pocatello to kick off the first annual Chamber Wellness 5k.

“I care about physical activity. I really want people in our community to get more active,” said the Chamber Wellness Coordinator, Holly Sierra.

The Portneuf Health Care Foundation and the Chamber of Commerce teamed up to put on a free event that is all about getting people involved and getting them moving.

Holly Sierra comments, “I really feel like physical activity is contagious. So people see people running, jogging, biking, playing in the park, I think people think wait that’s a good idea I want to do that too, so I hope this can be a contagious event.”

And contagious it was. Whether for physical or social activity, participants came from around the community to join in on the fun.

Victor Gomez, a participant in the 5k said: “I think it’s because there are so many people that do it and just the fact that you don’t have to be young or old or anything you get all types of people.”

This morning was the first 5k that the Chamber Wellness Program put on, but it came as a result of a bigger push for overall health.

“This is a culmination event for the 10,000 step challenge, the 8-week, 10,000 step challenge that finishes today. So all of these, most of these people, are participants and a lot of them brought spouses, friends, neighbors, colleagues, so it’s a lot of fun,” said Holly.

We decided to get involved with this 10,000 step challenge here at KPVI too, and it really has helped with our health , happiness, and our overall wellness.

“I feel like I’m more healthy from it. I feel I have more energy, so this was kind of my goal, to do a 5k,” said Kim Riesberg who works with us at KPVI.

With help from the Chamber of Commerce, the Portneauf Health Foundation is hoping to do 3 or 4 of these “energizer” challenges a year to get our community moving.
