It’s National Child Safety Week and researchers at Ohio State University are now discovering that specific car seats don’t necessarily fit into all car models.

Car crashes are the leading cause of death for children 1 to 13 years old, and in most cases, fatalities were due to misuse of the child’s safety seat.

“As each vehicle is different, each seat is different, that variety it’s important for a parent to know how to properly install their child in their vehicle,” said child safety seat technician, Maggie Frei.

Properly installing a car seat isn’t the only task, it gets much more detailed than simply reading the directions and buckling your kids in tight.

“Some seats come possibly expired, they’ve been in the family for a while and parents don’t understand that they do expire,” said Frei.

Local police departments are stepping up and providing certified technicians to help teach caregivers the proper way to install seats to keep children riding as safe as possible.

Frei comments, “we see the need for correct installation, it’s important to us because we see the results of what happens if the child is not properly installed in the vehicle.”

Along with community inspection events, the police department always has someone on hand to help out with your car seat questions.

“If a caregiver wants to come in Monday through Friday during the day they can contact one of us and we will do a seat check here they don’t have to have an appointment,” said Frei.

Along with correct installation, car seat technicians at the Pocatello and Chubbuck Police Departments are more than happy to provide parents with more information on the child’s next steps after they grow out of safety seats, and when it is okay for them to ride with just a seat belt.
