After hearing about the tragic death of Noelle Shawver on Wednesday, family member Patrina Udy decided she needed to help.
Thursday morning Udy created a GoFundMe account hoping to raise enough money to cover the costs of Noelle’s funeral and other expenses the family incurred after the accident.
“Obviously there are a lot of expenses that come along with not only the funeral but I’m sure there are going to be some medical expenses and other things like taking time off work and all that,” Udy said. “You still have bills coming in.”
She said she picked GoFundMe on a whim and setting it up was simple.
“It took us 20 minutes, 20 minutes of work, it’s unbelievable,” she said.
In just ten hours the site raised more than $15,000. Donations were given by more than 300 people, and the page has been shared nearly 3,000 times on Facebook.
“I’m just glad that everyone is stepping up and the community is helping out, friends and family,” Udy said. “I’m Stacie’s cousin and I live in Elko, I have friends in Elko that have never even met Stacie (Noelle’s mom) that have been donating.”
Amid the heartache and loss, Udy says there’s at least one thing that can bring the community hope.
“It’s kind of a reconfirmation that, there are so many bad and evil things going on in the world, but it’s reconfirmation that people genuinely are good,” she said.
At the time of this posting the GoFundMe has raised more than $18,000 and does not show signs of slowing down.
