Disney Buys Pocatello Man's Company for $500 Million

One Pocatello, ID resident has 500-million reasons to celebrate. The company Shay Carl Butler co-founded has been bought by Disney. The House of Mouse is buying Maker Studios, an operator of YouTube video channels, for $500 million, as consumers watch more videos online. The purchase gives Disney ownership of 55,000 channels with 380 million subscribers and 5.5 billion views per month. Disney CEO Bob Iger said in a statement that short-form online video is growing fast. He says the acquisition puts Disney at the center of a dynamic industry.

Hackers worked their way into the computer systems of "thousands" of American companies last year. Target's breach was massive, and one of the most publicized, with the theft of credit card and personal information from tens of millions of Americans. But it's one of more than 3,000 U.S. businesses hacked last year, according to the Washington Post. The paper reports federal agents alerted the companies to the attacks. Among the victims, other national retailers, both small and large businesses, local banks, and defense contractors.

Google is trying to give its "Glass" a little more class. The company is trying to team up with the company that makes Ray-Ban and Oakley frames to spiff up the image of its Google Glass. The deal is designed to make the Internet-connected eyewear less geeky and more like something people would normally wear. Google Glass is a computer device that includes a small screen above the wearer's right eye to view Internet content. It also includes a camera. Google has so far only sold its Glass to a select group of test subjects known as "Explorers."
