Students at Dora Erickson Elementary School in Idaho Falls were joined by prominent community and state leaders to celebrate their very first leadership day.
The school has started a program called “Leader in Me;” which applies Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
to a school environment.
The program encourages students to take control of their learning and their lives by developing leadership skills. There's also a smaller version of Stephen Covey's book the students have read and applied to everyday tasks.
“Students here at Dora Erickson this year have really learned that they are a product of their choices and not a product of their circumstances and that’s really been key to some of their success” said school counselor Dave Webster.
“You know I think, there’s always work to do and I don’t think if we’re ever perfect that there still wouldn’t be more work to do because the bar just gets raised but I just really like the support we’ve had from the parents and the patrons and all the changes and things that we’ve had to do” said principal John Murdoch.
The “Leader in Me” program is a three year program Dora Erickson Elementary and other District 91 schools are incorporating into their system.
