Feed the Beast is an effort made by ISU and ISU Credit Union to bring the Beast on campus in a location that the community and students can bring non-perishable food items or monetary donations to help fill newly opened Benny's Pantry.
"Our goal, our mission is to alleviate food insecurity where it may exist in the ISU community and we are aware that there are students and perhaps even staff members experiencing times of food crisis and we don't want students to have to make the choice between their text books and school supplies and being able to eat nutritious meals,” says Brooke Barber, ISU.
The goal of ISU Credit Union is to make sure that this Beast is full of food by the end of the day.
"I had never thought that there was a food need or a food insufficiency on this campus. It's something that I had never even thought about, and then I began to hear stories about parents who are going to school, one or both of them and they buy food, they fix a meal, they feed their kids and then they eat whatever is left over, says Rick Cheatum, ISU Credit Union.
Dr. Laura Vailas, ISU's first lady inspired the initiative and the advisory board got to work on developing the pantry and so far, the community has been responsive to it."I think this was an unidentified need probably, and so it's nice that they have identified the need and they are doing something extra for the kids that are going to school up here. I never had to face that when I went to school, but I'm sure this day and age unfortunately it's the way of the world,” says Kathy Maraz.
Brooke says students have expressed their gratitude and shared stories of how the pantry has already helped them.
"So we are just thrilled to be able to offer that to our community."
If you were not able to get up to feed the beast, you can still donate food at Ponds Student Union during operations hours or go online to donate at isu.edu/foundation.
