The Portneuf Greenway Foundation held their fifth annual fundraising gala Saturday night.

“Let’s just say it’s the best year we’ve ever done, “ said the foundation’s Executive Director, Tamara Code.

The Portneuf Greenway Foundation is in charge of keeping those trails that we all know in love in top shape, but the trails aren’t just a good way to stay active.

“It helps keep people healthier because it gives a place for people to walk for free, they don’t have to pay a gym membership, and it’s also an economic development tool because businesses that are looking to come into Pocatello look at the quality of life and our quality of life huge with finished greenway trails,” comments Tamara.

It takes about $100,000 per mile to build and maintain the greenway walking paths, which is why fundraising events like their annual gala are so important.

Tamara adds: “We’ve got 2 new trails planned for next year in the Highland area and I’m pretty excited for those, so that’s what we’re raising money for.”

This year, the Board of Directors decided to mix it up and have a murder mystery event to help raise the funds for the new walking paths.

Amber Alder who is on the board took part in the action, saying, “I am Sara the ghost, I am one of the actors, and obviously I’m ghostly and they’re trying to figure out who killed me!”

In addition to solving Sara the ghost’s murder, gala attendees had the opportunity to bid on tasty treats, desserts were donated to the event by several local bakers.

“We don’t serve dessert with your meal so if you want dessert you have to buy it. So we serve it at the table that night and if there’s some left over you get to take it home,” said Tamara.

After all the crime solving and baked good bidding, the Portneuf Greenway walked away with about $5,000 from ticket sales alone, and the money from the dessert auction was just icing on the cake.

“We have people coming this year that I don’t even know, and usually I know most of the people. So it’s pretty exciting that we’re getting some new people to come in who are interested in the greenway and helping us build,” said Tamara.

The Portneuf Greenway Foundation had held the gala and the Juniper Country Club in years past, but they are looking to expand the gala next year as they sold out the banquet room with about 100 people in attendance.
