A float down the river in February, running down Main Street in nothing but your swimsuit, eating chili with Matt Gittins…it’s no wonder the annual Fire and Ice Winterfest in Lava Hot Springs has been named “one of the top 10 zaniest winter festivals in the world,” by USA Today.

Bingo, Comedy, and Karaoke, that’s what’s on tap this evening as Winterfest is underway here in Lava Hot Springs. As much fun as these events sound, they are pretty mellow compared to what is coming tomorrow and Sunday.

Disc Golf has surged in popularity here in eastern Idaho and so it’s only fitting that there is a spot for this during Winterfest. The tournament runs from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with an entry fee that is based on ability.  Your fee not only covers the round of golf but you also get a free t-shirt and admission to the hot pools.

At 2:00 PM, adrenalin junkies from far and wide will converge on the mighty Portneuf River as part of “Frosty’s Polar Bear Float”. Costumes are encouraged for this wild ride in the frigid water. In the past they’ve seen people dressed as Santa, the Easter Bunny and even as rock stars. Prizes will be awarded for best costume and the $10 entry fee covers the tube rental. You can sign up at Mountain Mayhem on Main Street.

From 4:00 PM- 6:00 PM, a Chili Cookoff will take place at the Chuckwagon Restaurant. In an exclusive interview, we were able to talk to a judge in this event to see what he’ll be looking for in this always competitive event.

Once this event comes to a close, all eyes will be pointed towards the sky as “L” mountain comes to life. Some of the area’s top skiers will work their way down the mountain slope with torches illuminating the mountain.

The events continue on Sunday with Lava’s version of the running of the bulls. Participants will run from the Lava Hot Springs Inn to the World Famous Hot Pools wearing nothing but their swimsuits and flip flops. This race begins at 11:00 AM.

And at Noon there will be a rubber penguin race. It’s basically the same as a rubber duck race but with rubber penguins. Prizes will be awarded for the top three winning penguins.

These are just a few of the events that are going on and you can find more information at this link.
