A public forum at the Idaho State University’s Student Union Building helped many local people understand the Idaho Health Insurance Exchange.

Stephen Weeg, the Chairman of the Board for Your Health Idaho told us, “People without health insurance live sicker and die younger so this is a chance to change that.”

The Affordable Care Act is supposed to give 190,000 Idahoans access to better health care by means of health insurance, but in order to do that, they need to first be able to access the website.

Barry Smith, a local man who attended the forum said, “I spent two hours this morning, I got on their live chat, I called them in person, and couldn’t get any help from anybody to get it resolved all they could tell me is just keep trying later.”

The website is the biggest problem that Your Health Idaho is seeing with this exchange and that’s why they decided to host a public forum to get questions answered.

“We’re helping them understand the process, showing them what premium discounts might be available depending on their income, helping them understand how to buy insurance and then showing them the website and how to find help if they need help,” commented Weeg.

Stephen also mentioned to us that the response has been mainly positive for those who have gotten through the website woes, but unfortunately not everyone is happy with their new options.

“The best I can tell right now is that it’s going to cost us quite a bit more money, to get the same kind of coverage we have now,” said Barry Smith.

Those on the Your Health Idaho board understand that it can be frustrating trying to navigate an ill-working website, but don’t give up just yet.

“There’s time,” says Weeg, “you know you have until the middle of December to enroll to be eligible January first for coverage. So there’s time to wait a little bit until things settle out, and we’re looking for other ways to help people enroll, like paper applications.”

If you still have questions about the health care exchange and what it means for your insurance, you can visit the marketplace at youridahohealth.org.
