Reed Gym at Idaho State University is often home to athletic activity; however earlier Saturday it provided those in the community with homelessness challenges a place to find support and supplies.

Event Organizer Shawn Kelsch explained positive outcomes when he said that, “I think that the biggest thing is seeing the community come together to overcome something that is such a problem in our society right now. To be able to do this and to be able to come together is huge.”

The definition of being homeless is more complicated that Just living on the streets.

“A lot of people think of homelessness as people just living under a bridge, they don’t take into account the other situations like people without utilities or couch surfing on a regular basis. They don’t take those people into consideration the low income people do come through here as well to get help, you know, it’s a huge problem,” Kelsch said.

One of the most popular services offered were haircuts. Trina Gillard, from Trina’s Sensational Salon took the day off of paying clients to help the needy. As another volunteer explains, helping others is rewarding.

Rebecca Richardson, who was handing out warm clothing explained that, “It’s been great to see the smiles, people come through here and you just kinda brighten their day.”

Shawn agrees, saying that it is a very simple gesture that makes all the volunteering worth it.

“You know every single individual that walks out of here that’s been a participant they say thank you. That’s the first thing they do (when) they walk out (they say) thanks. That’s all I need,” Kelsch said.
