Wikipedia may be the most well-known of knowledge resources on the internet but soon a treasure trove like it will be based right here in our backyard.
The Idaho Museum of Natural History has announced it has received a $600,000 dollar grant from the Hitz Foundation for its Virtual Museum of Idaho.
The Virtual Museum will allow anyone with online access to examine 2-D and 3-D images of the Idaho Museum of Natural History collections.
The images are accurate to .01 millimeters.
Dr. Herbert Maschner, Director of the Idaho Museum of Natural History, says the virtual museum will be step along the way in the democratization of science.
“We will be taking the lead now in creating the methods and tools for putting entire museum repositories in virtual environments so the world can have access to them,” said Dr. Maschner.
Maschner says the project will get underway at the beginning of next year and take five years to complete.
