February in eastern Idaho is not a time when you would
normally think about participating in a disc golf event. Even your dog might
take a pass on chasing a flying disc around, but sure enough an event is taking
place Saturday in Idaho Falls.

While there is a reason why the baskets at most disc golf
courses never come down, it’s usually just the diehards who are out there in
January and February. But there is one exception and it’s called the Ice Bowl.

“It was one guy’s dream back in Kansas, he said the food
banks didn’t have enough food after Christmas time and he started this back
there,” said Casey Kemmerer, South Fork Disc Golf.

Today there are Ice Bowl events held throughout North
America and Europe. In fact there are 35 Ice Bowls scheduled for Saturday
alone. While most of these will take place at established courses, the Idaho
Falls Ice Bowl is being held at Tautphaus Park where temporary baskets will be
brought in.

“The city of Idaho Falls was nice enough to let us do it
over here,” said Casey. “During the winter, there is no traffic over there and
the landscape is great for disc golf because there are a lot of trees that have
narrow fairways.”

The Ice Bowl has three divisions and you certainly don’t need
to be an expert to participate because this isn’t about how accurate you can
throw a disc, it’s about how much they can help the food bank.

Ever since October, we are going through 1,000 families a
month, so the need is great for people to donate food and money and that type
of thing so we can purchase food for the needier people in this area,” said
Buck Horton, Chairman of the Idaho Falls Community Food Bank.

The cost to participate is $25 and five cans of food. This
is the third time that an Ice Bowl event has been held in the city and it has
gown every year.

“This is another marvelous group, again, part of the
community who goes through and organizes such as this so that they can help
those who are a little bit more in need and it’s marvelous to have groups like
this,” said Horton.

Registration opens at 8:30 AM. Each participant will receive
a free disc with the Ice Bowl logo on it.
