Each year Idahoans donate tens of thousands of pounds of food to local food banks, but sometimes setting up those food drives can be a logistical nightmare.

The Idaho Food Bank has launched a new program that has made organizing a food drive as easy as a click of the mouse.

"We're reaching a market that has yet to be tapped," said the Idaho Food Banks East Branch Manager Rebecca Ristrem.

In its attempt to feed the hungry, the Idaho Food Bank is taking food drives into a new direction, that new direction is using the internet. Earlier this year the food bank introduced its virtual food drive program.

"We know, through market research there is a group of people who like to do all of their purchasing online," said Ristrem

With this online method individuals interested in helping with food drives can set one up in just minutes by visiting the food bank's website.  Once there you are presented with a series of options to either donate money or host your own food drive.

"For us every dollar that we collect from individuals, that's three meals that we can provide to the needy,” Ristrem explained.

One of the nice things about virtual food drives is it shows just how far each dollar goes. While navigating the menu, you will see what it costs the food bank to purchase and you can compare that to the retail costs.

Ristrem adds, "The virtual food drive is easy, it's convenient and you can do it from anywhere.”
