One man is dead after a standoff with police that occurred Thursday morning.

According to the Pocatello Police Department, they received a 911 call around 8:15 AM in which the caller hung up. An officer was then sent to a home on Flint Circle to investigate. After the officer arrived on the scene, the situation deteriorated and shots were fired. An individual then barricaded himself inside the residence.
Bannock County Sheriff deputies and troopers from Idaho State Police then arrived on the scene. A short time later, police heard what they believed to be a muffled gunshot inside the residence. Upon entering the home, police found the suspect with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. That individual was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.

Indian Hills Elementary was placed on controlled access and messages were sent out to parents of students. That controlled access was lifted after the situation was resolved.

ISP is now investigating the incident.

I have to say as a parent of two daughters that attend Indian Hills that the picture accompanying this article is reprehensible. The voicemail MSG sent to parents from the school district said the school was on controlled access, not complete lock down. Images like this only foster unwarranted panic in the community. I hope the individuals truly affected by this situation are safe. I also hope our local media takes responsibility for helping the school officials and law enforcement put people on alert without feeling the need to sensationalize the situation for their own benefit next time.
