Tech 2.0 for Monday, October 22, 2012
Those who follow Apple believe they have figured out most of the particulars of a smaller iPad expected to be revealed on Tuesday. One big question remains, though: What will it cost? Apple hasn't said anything about the device, but tech bloggers and analysts expect a device with a screen measuring 7.85 inches on the diagonal, making it about half the size of the regular iPad. Apple sells the iPad 2 for $399 and the 4-inch iPod Touch for $199. Company watchers are pegging the price of the smaller iPad somewhere in between. Most of the guesses range from $249 to $299. Apple is holding the presentation at a theater in San Jose, Calif., starting at 10 a.m. local time.
Be ready for a learning curve when Windows 8 from Microsoft comes out this Friday. The Windows system you're used to has been replaced by a completely different one that will force you to learn new ways of getting things done. Instead of the familiar Start menu and icons, Windows 8 displays applications as a colorful array of tiles. The "photos" tile shows a picture from your collection, the "People" tile shows images from your social-media contacts. Windows 8 will be standard on practically all PCs from now on.
This could be the year that Internet ads top print ads. The Interactive Advertising Bureau says Internet sites collected $17 billion in ad revenue in the first half of the year. If it continues at that rate, Internet ads will take in more than the nearly $36 billion that magazines and newspapers made last year. The digital marketing research firm eMarketer predicts that Internet ads will amount to $37 billion, about $4 billion more than print ads. Neither one comes close to what's spent on TV ads. That totaled nearly $73 billion last year.
