Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is celebrating the imminent release of the company's Windows operating system after two years of work. Windows 8 is the most dramatic overhaul of the personal computer market's dominant operating system in 17 years. Microsoft Corp. redesigned it so it will run on increasingly popular tablet computers, as well as PCs. Another version of Windows 8 is being released for smartphones next week. PCs and tablets running on Windows 8 go on sale Friday. While appearing at an event in New York, Ballmer hailed Windows 8 PCs as the best machines ever made. More than 1,000 PCs have been certified to run Windows 8. In a departure from its usual software-focused strategy, Microsoft is selling a tablet called Surface that runs on Windows 8.

Best Buy's Geek Squad has knocked itself out to get ready to help you with the launch of Windows 8. Best Buy spent three years creating a plan for the launch of Microsoft's radical remake of Windows as a way to lure customers to its stores. Two of those years were spent developing 45 exclusive Windows 8 computers and laptops, half of which feature touch screens. Best Buy spent 50,000 hours training the Geek Squad to walk customers through the ins and outs of Windows 8. Best Buy also has created online tutorials to explain Windows 8.

Yahoo Inc. has purchased a mobile app developer, Stamped, the first acquisition under new CEO Marissa Mayer. Stamped, a year-and-a-half-old startup based in New York, runs a website and mobile app for customers to make online recommendations of their favorite things to read, listen to or eat. Terms of the purchase were not disclosed in Thursday's announcement. Yahoo senior vice president Adam Cahan says the Stamped team will help create a new center of mobile product development for Yahoo. Mayer became Yahoo's CEO six weeks ago after 13 years as a key executive at Google Inc. She indicated when Yahoo reported quarterly earnings this week that acquisitions are a priority and the company is targeting relatively small startups willing to sell for less than $100 million.
