For many Americans, Veteran’s Day is dear to their hearts and at Hillview Elementary School in Ammon it’s no different. Teachers, students and veterans got together to celebrate those in the military.
5th grade teacher Jennifer Kidd took on the Veteran’s Day program at Hillview 3 years ago after her students sang some songs in the school gymnasium.
“Patriotism is really important to me and it should be important to our kids and so I walked up to the principal on the way out and I said from now on I’ll do it” said Kidd.
Now it’s something school staff and students look forward to every year.
The 5th grade student class is the group who performs in the Veteran’s Day Show singing songs and memorizing heart-warming lines.
“I have each of them bring a picture of the veterans from their own families to put into the slideshow so they have a little bit of ownership into whom they’re thanking and appreciating and hopefully that spears some conversation with their own families” continued Kidd.
The entire program lasts about an hour.
“I think the kids all need to understand that we need to be thankful and appreciate what we have around us and it’s because of our veterans and so by having the kids come and hear about why we have Veteran’s Day I hope that you know, they go home with a little glimpse of what they day is about” said Kidd.
There will be another Veteran’s Day show at Hillview Elementary tonight at 6:30. All parents, community members and veterans are invited.
