An amazing student from Holy Rosary in Idaho Falls has earned a ride to school in a fire truck because he has gone above and beyond what was required of him in a school reading competition.
His name is Ryan, he’s in the 3rd grade and he’s already read half a million words since January of this year.
“The volunteer librarian that we have at our school, organized a twofold challenge for the kids, one was based on a class participation and reading, and the other one was an individual challenge” said Principal Carina VanPelt.
The individual challenge consisted of reading as many words as each child could and scoring well on their accelerated reading tests.
3rd grader Ryan read a lot and got 100% on each AR test he took.
“Teachers, parents, people who know kids know that that’s an amazing feat for a third grader to read that many words in such a short time” continued VanPelt.
I asked Ryan why he liked to read so much.
“Sometimes our teacher assigns projects where you have to read a book and sometimes there’s more books in the series so I want to read more books in the series because the first one was good” said Ryan.
This love for reading must run in the family because Ryan’s older sister was the runner up in the competition.
Ryan is currently reading one of the harry potter books and says he plans to continue to read for the rest of the school year.
The Idaho Falls fire department actively promotes literacy for the children of Idaho Falls and many of the students in the area get to ride in a fire truck to school after accomplishing a hard reading goal.
