A former Snake River High School athlete is recovering in a Jamaican hospital after being involved in a bicycle vs automobile accident Friday.

Elder Nate Martin is serving as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the country and was the person on the bicycle.  No details are currently available on the accident.

Intial reports suggested Elder Martin may not make it through his injuries but his conditions continued improve following a five hour brain surgery.  He awoke this morning and was able to recognize people in the room, speak as well as move his extremities.

Doctors with the LDS Church tell the Martin Family that this is truly a miracle saying they have never seen someone with this type of an injury overcome the trauma.

The family tells KPVI Sports Director Matt Gittins that doctors remain cautiously optimistic.

Elder Martin's parents Bill and Kimra wish to thank the community for their thoughts, well wishes and prayers.

They will be on a flight to visit their son in Jamaica on Monday
