Today Idaho is joining 46 states across the country to celebrate Digital Learning Day. It’s a method many teachers are pushing towards for 21st century learning.

Mountain Valley Elementary invited us into a classroom where a teacher uses digital media to help her students have the desire to learn.

Students in this 3rd grade class at Mountain Valley Elementary don’t just come to school to learn, they actually look forward to it. That’s because of the efforts of their teacher.

“I overheard one of my students saying I can’t wait to get home so I can actually do what I want to do, and I think that changed the way I
looked at how I taught, the perspective, I really wanted them to come to learn, want to learn, and to learn something that was you know relevant and exciting for them” said teacher Jennifer Duckwall.

Mrs. Duckwall decided it was time for some changes. One of those; was to let the students teach each other through videos.

“I think it’s fun to edit cuz you get to figure out how you want the video to be instead of, just having other people do what they want” said 3rd grader Traycen Harris.

“It’s really fun because we can learn how to use computers while we’re learning our school stuff, and then we do a lot of computer mixed in with school stuff, like geometry and math” said Brailey Green.

“It’s really fun and you learn a lot” said Jordi Steele.

Not only were the videos fun to make, but the student’s test scores started to go up significantly. In fact, 96% of the class was above the 5th

“That was pretty exciting for me because the kids were from all different levels but they were all able to succeed on the test because they weren’t taught to a test, they were taught to be excited about learning” continued Duckwall.

“Well I was at a 1st grade test grade and now I’m at one of the top in my class 5th grade 5th month” continued Green.

It’s easy to see these students are all for digital learning day.
