Usually, schools and teachers receive awards at the end of the school year, but a local teacher at Idaho Falls’ Holy Rosary School was just awarded the Teacher Association Elementary Outstanding Teacher Award. We caught up with winner; Kelly Flaherty to find out more about what she did to win this award.

While this is a difficult award for any teacher to earn; Mrs. Flaherty says she’s honored since social studies is her favorite subject.

Although social studies is Mrs. Flaherty’s favorite subject, her personal goal was to increase her science teaching skills.

“Watching the eyes light up, watching them build those solar machines that they built last spring; watching them go and going through that process of rebuilding and changing, so it’s a fun subject and I’m learning to appreciate it even more” said Flaherty.

Classes Mrs. Flaherty took over the summer helped her prepare better and more fun ways to teach her students. One of the teacher courses she took was called ISTEM.

“Science became part of really what we did. It became part of our reading, it became part of our daily math, the idea of looking at an insect with an engineering sense and figuring out, how it got the parts that it did and why the parts are the way they are and how we can take that information and create perhaps an insect for another environment” continued Flaherty.

Mrs. Flaherty says although she has no idea why or how she was chosen to receive this award, she says she feels great about it and is happy she put in the extra time to learn how to better teach her students.

“I love teaching science, I love the idea, especially some of the new ideas that of the observation, teaching the skills more so than some of the other more conceptual” said Flaherty.

Mrs. Flaherty has a total of 25 students in her classroom. She teaches 3rd and 4th graders.
