Many say that variety's the very spice of life and after taking the Portneuf Valley Fun Run Series in from a competitor’s perspective, two local women decided to change things up a little bit this season and get a look at the races from an organizers point of view.

On this November day, they were filling bags for athletes involved in the Just Cuz Half Marathon, but for the past half-decade, friends Nancy Crawford and Lynne Schultz have been competing.

“I had walked in the Fun Run Series for about five or six years,” said Nancy.

But when the 2013 Portneuf Valley Fun Run Series rolled around, they decided a change was in order.

“We signed up to do the water stations every Saturday morning there was a Fun Run,” Nancy said.

And for the past five races that's where they were. Cheering on those who just a year before they ran side by side with.

“A lot of times this is the first step in people getting fit,” said Lynne.

“They’re making a difference to themselves and so they are out there trying to make themselves healthy, it’s just an awesome program,” Nancy said.

“It doesn’t matter if you finish first or last you’re part of an organization that accomplished something that not everyone can accomplish,” Lynne said.

But it is that one person, who some on the course have long forgotten, that holds a special place in the hearts of these volunteers.

“It’s just so much fun to wait for that very last person because you know they’re tired, they want to keep going, and you’re there to help them,” said Nancy.

“Us just cheering them on at whatever aid station we’re at, that can make a difference,” Lynne said, “it perks them up and makes them smile and when they cross that finish line they have that sense of accomplishment and we feel like we’re a part of that.”

“Volunteering is the most important thing we can do in our community,” said Nancy.

“It’s the right thing to do, if we have the ability to give, then we should give,” Lynne said.

There are a few perks to volunteering for the Fun Run Series, for every race you volunteer you get an entry to a later Fun Run of your choice.
