Here in Idaho we typically get a later start on spring than most; but a local business hasn’t let that slow them down.
“We assumed the recession was going to really hit us and so I was wanting Max to cut back on our numbers of things that we grew because I didn’t want to get stuck with a bunch of flowers at the end of the season” said Owner Melanie Clements, “and we actually increased our business that year, which was so surprising to us.”
Maybe it’s the different varieties of things, like over 20 types of pansies and over 30 types of petunias, which bring so many people out to the Treehouse Nursery.
“You know the quality of our flowers has always been quite exceptional and the prices bring them all out, we send out a flyer every spring and people respond to that pretty well” added Clements.
Perhaps the most amazing thing is how this company does their business. Most of their employees are local neighborhood kids.
“It started back when our oldest kids were young and they’d be riding home on the bus saying that they were heading to work and so their friends would say ‘hey can I get a job’ and so they started calling, and every year the phone rings off the hook in the spring around March, and we’ll typically hire maybe 15 kids” continued Clements.
Max and Melanie feel that hiring these kids not only gives them great skills to use, but that they also understand the world and their place in it a little bit better as they tend and care for the plants.
The Treehouse Nursery Company is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The address is 3265 W. 2000 N in Rexburg.
