With more and more planned and unplanned disasters happening around the world, Madison County wanted to step up and practice their emergency response preparedness.

The specific training exercise they’re doing is to prepare for a possible anthrax attack.
Several different departments and agencies have come together to make this simulation as real as possible.

“Well our goal in that instance would be to get medications into as many people as we could in the first 48 hour period” said Operations Chief Holly Peterson.

Several volunteers have come forward to play the part of exposed community members.

“You know, it means everything because we do not have adequate staff at the health department to take care of everyone, so when we have volunteers come through it’s actually a training for them and a training for us” continued Peterson.

The Eastern Idaho Public Health District feels exercises like these are a good way to work with the community and show them what will be expected of them when there is an actual disaster.

“It’s important for individuals, families, communities, to be prepared for themselves, I mean have a family plan, have an emergency kit at your home so that first and foremost you can take care of yourself in an emergency” said Peterson.

State and local emergency preparedness staff are required to participate in exercises like these on a regular basis.

In all there were 26 volunteers at the simulation plus the hundreds of BYU-Idaho students.
