If you think you are seeing more cabs on the streets of Pocatello, you are right. A quick internet search shows that are a half dozen or so companies willing to give you a ride for cash, and that doesn’t include Craigslist.
Once something you would only see in a larger city, the popularity of cabs has surged in Pocatello lately.
“It’s an advantage to our community that we do have more taxi cabs available now because of course the police department, we would rather see that if you’ve had a drink of two, if you are out and about, that you do take a cab home instead of driving yourself,” said Dianne Brush, Public Information Officer for the Pocatello Police Department. “A couple of drinks, you should probably take a cab.”
People use cabs for all sorts of reasons especially in the winter when the roads are slick. But are they safe?
“What has changed a little bit is that all of the taxi drivers have to come in here to the police department and get finger printed and photographed and have a national criminal background check,” said Brush.
The different cab companies often have their own way of charging their customers. For instance some charge by the mile and others will charge by the time or trip. The rates can change if you are going to or from the airport too.
“If you are going to use a taxi, it’s probably best to see what the fare is going to be,” said Dianne Brush, Public Information Officer for the Pocatello Police Department. “That is one of the complaints that we do get from citizens in town here because we don’t require that they put meters in the cabs and we don’t set a rate.”
You can always call and get a rate quote on the phone. You can even get some of this information online.
