Mother’s day was special this year for one Pocatello family, for one thing, they have seen quite a few of them. Nine children all look up to Nellie Lucero, 91. Nellie’s children range from 73 to 56 years old, all living and all very supportive

Her son, Vic noted that, “My mom, she’s 91 she’ll be 92 in august and she’s never lost her sense of humor, her wit, she’s always maintained that and were all lucky to have her and to have enjoyed her all these years.”

Nellie talked about her young life as a mother who cared for nine children and worked in the fields. She made her children’s clothes, cooked them meals and didn’t have a washing machine.

She said that, “I felt myself like a mother hen with a whole bunch of little chickens and the chickens…look how old they are now.”

To celebrate Mother’s day, she spent time with her children but also managed to do well with her recent trip to fort hall

“Oh i spent two hours gambling (at fort hall) yeah.. and i won and i said i would do it again,” Nellie said.

Nellie has sacrificed a lot over the years, but has a lot of family support. Her birthday parties have become an extravaganza that began with a mistake.

Vic recalls that, “I remember when we had her eightieth birthday and we had a great big party for her and then we found out that she was 79 instead of 80 and the next year we had our second annual 80th birthday party and from then on it just took off and now come august were gonna have her thirteenth annual 80th birthday party.”

If there’s one thing that we can all be assured of, it’s that Nellie hasn’t lost her spunk.

But now they’re old they’re all trying to catch up with mother but they’re not going to!
