Portneuf medical center performed a historic procedure Wednesday when they replaced a heart valve without opening up the chest.

Dr. Delarosa, instrumental in the procedure said, "you can imagine, open heart surgery with a closed chest and you’re working from a leg to replace a heart valve. so all of those things were met and as soon as it was available for us to get which was now, we were able to find qualified patients."

The procedure, as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement surgery, was performed for the first time ever in eastern Idaho. Generally speaking the procedure is different from open heart surgery in that the doctor can go in though a different area of the body and not have to open up the chest cavity in order to perform the operation, making it safer and making recovery time greatly reduced.

Dr. Delarosa continued, "anyone who has gone through an operation procedure anything that they’ve had done, they know what it feels like to wake up from anesthesia and now imagine that you’re up and walking right away and moving and can i go home? it’s a very big difference. people feel like they just had their gall bladder taken out or something and they just feel good to go."
The patient of the surgery, Flowd Gleed exclaimed that, "I really didn’t expect to feel this good when i got through with heart surgery. all i can say is that these guys are great. they performed a miracle is what i figured they did."

Having just had surgery yesterday, this patient is thinking of his next step in life and his next project.
Gleed explained what he hopes to get back to when he described a, "1-9-4-7 GMC pickup with a retrofitted v8 motor in it. so far, i’ve been able to do all the work on it myself, well see what happens now."

Eight more Transaortic valve replacements are planned in the next two weeks, that coming from a list of about 30 patients who need to have this procedure done.
