The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. Each year, up to 141 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students.
The candidates were selected because of their exceptional scores on either the SAT or the ACT college assessments. Other considerations are also used. This includes student essays, school recommendations and transcripts.
School District 25 has one student on this list. Bryan Grigg found out earlier this week that he was a nominee. The Highland senior scored high on both the ACT and SAT exams. He plans on serving an LDS mission immediately after high school and then attending college.
Bryan says this nomination will help him secure a spot at the college of his choice and after that he plans on helping others.
School District 93 had three students nominated, School District 91 had a student make the list and a student from West Side also made the list. The nominees will be trimmed down to a list of 500 semifinalists in April. The U.S. Department of Education will announce the top Scholars in May and they will be invited to Washington, DC to be recognized and participate in events and activities surrounding the prestigious selection.
Here is a complete list of the students from Idaho who made the list.
