I understand both points from RegularMom74 & Piper. Lets face it RegularMom74 we live in Idaho so HELLO!!! yes race plays into most issues that arise regarding Fort Hall Reservation. Mr. Toane broke the law and should have to owe up to his consequences. The officer who shot Mr. Toane is being investigated along with other law enforcement at the scene. Another fact is the reservation is in Bingham & Bannock County. On another note if it was an individual who was fleeing from Fort Hall to Pocatello would this have been legit for a FHPD officer to shoot? So thinline and RegularMom74 know and understand that yes the racial scars and trauma are there and will not heal until people realize there are many racist people in Idaho. Side note his tires were blown maybe they could of done a maneuver to render his vehicle useless. Anyone thought about that?

Also Piper, they couldn't just let him go and catch up with him later. He was a danger to the public which is why the chase started (remember the accident that started it all?). If they had let him go and he'd run into another car killing someone, it would be the cops fault for letting a dangerous individual continue driving erratically.

White Crane - you can't taser someone who is in a vehicle. You have to be able to make physical contact with the person. Piper, the suspect was ramming his vehicle into officers' vehicles. He was actively causing a situation that could have killed an officer therefore lethal force was justified. Jurisdictionally, he started in Bannock County/Chubbuck and fled to Fort Hall. Therefore, the jurisdiction WAS in Bannock County. And technically, Fort Hall is IN Bannock County and they have an agreement to work together. All I hear is the cops should have done this or that differently. Perhaps the suspect shouldn't have been driving intoxicated, perhaps the suspect shouldn't have left the scene of an accident, perhaps the the suspect should have stopped for officers, perhaps he shouldn't have rammed the police cars. I'm pretty sure that he is culpable for his own actions and is responsible for all the events that transpired due to his actions.

Thinline, you were the only one who said race..I think the rest of us implied "jurisdiction." There are other options besides shooting someone to get a suspect into custody. It's not always a game of cops and robbers...

Why does it come down to race? The subject committed aggravated assault by ramming the first vehicle, which is a felony. Doesn't matter who is driving or location of the suspect. The police will do what is necessary to get the suspect into custody. You can't taser a suspect while operating a motor vehicle. Maybe karma caught up with the driver. All these comments don't make the situation clearer, just muddies the water for more stupid racist slurs, comments, and miss unerstandings!

Hit and run is not a reason to shoot someone. The cops knew who the suspect was and could have arrested him at his house later. Law enforcement should try to deescalate a situation not make it more dangerous. BCSO needs to let Fort Hall PD handle these situations.

The deputy could of used his tazer instead of blasting the young man an unknown amount of times! We need to keep these non-tribal law enforcement out of Fort Hall!
