Today was an exciting day for Portneuf Medical Center as they show off their new high tech addition.
Portneuf Medical Center and the chamber of commerce kicked off their new partnership with the first of its kind life flight in eastern Idaho.
"it's really good for our new partnership with Portneuf Medical Center as well because of their new trauma center...we're able to go get their patients and bring them back to them and really help out and be a part of it," said Tom Mortimer, Base Manager for Life Fight 81 (Pocatello).
The new life flight is designed around safety and speed that specializes in high altitude and mountains...which is very common in this area.
Mortimer "This helicopter has a moving Garmin map, so we can see with a Garmin system like you would find in your car. We can watch a satellite overlay of everywhere that we are flying. It alerts us to terrain, so if we are flying towards a mountain and we don't see it or for some reason, it will alert us and we get a voice in our helmets saying watch out for terrain, watch out for terrain. It does the same thing for other aircraft in the area," stated Mortimer.
The new aircraft has some other new exciting features that helps benefit both the patients and the crew.
Theresa Tuma, a RN Life Flight Paramedic, said that, "It gives us a little more room than the last one and full access to the patient which we even had before."
The best part about life flight is they are able to reach places that vehicles can't get to and to get there quicker to save lives.
"Life Flight Network definitely has a commitment to this area and to Portneuf Medical Center with supplying us with new and wonderful equipment that we can use."
And with not a moment to spare... The new helicopter went out on its first call this afternoon
