Many in Rexburg are stuck with the cleaning expenses for rain water, flood water and even sewage seeping into their homes during Tuesday's flood.
“You, know, [there is] $40,000 to $60,000 worth of damage in a lot of homes that we’ve seen,” Josh Aikele of Paul Davis restoration says. His crew has been busy all week repairing the water damage caused by Tuesday’s flood.
He says his company has cleaned 15 to 20 business and homes after flood waters rushed in.
Many homeowners have been cleaning up for themselves, but Aikele says there are major benefits to hiring a professional crew.
“Water damage doesn’t really show itself,” he says. “You can see what is going on on a floor in a bedroom, but you can’t see what is going on in a wall or moisture that is wicking up into the dry wall in that wall.”
This unseen damage can cause major problems down the road.
“The materials that were in that water, they don’t dry up with the water. It’s still there,” Aikele says. “So all those chemicals, fertilizers, or worse, sewage…can be dried up on your floor.”
Aikele also says mold spores can develop and spread throughout your home if areas are not dried and cleaned properly.
If you think you’ve already taken care of your damage, but want to make sure you’re protected from the residual effects of the flood, professionals can come in and check to make sure your house is safe and good to go.
“We can come in and check your progress, and we’re happy to do that, especially in this situation,” Aikele says.
