There is a senior care facility in Chubbuck that is taking National Nutrition Month to whole new level. This is based upon an American Academy of Family Physicians whom state that one in ten seniors in America suffers from poor nutrition. Summer Joy stopped by to find out the details.
"We just wanted to take what we do already here for our seniors and residents that we are taking care of and reach out to the greater local area so we can reach more seniors out there; to help more people's lives," said Kandi Bourdeau, the Community's Relations Director.
Emeritus at Ridge Wind and at Highland Hills has a goal to delivery ten thousand meals over the next 60 days to the Pocatello, Chubbuck, and Blackfoot communities.
"There is something about sitting down as a family or as friends and breaking bread together and having a hot meal together and just opening up and visiting. Sometimes just have that five or ten minute contact with someone is sometimes a lot more than seniors get," added kandi.
Kandi adds that poor nutrition can increase problems already common in seniors, like depression, improper healing, and a deficient immune system. Reasons for seniors not getting the proper meals includes a lack of, financial resources, transportation or interest in eating healthy.
"This is just our way of saying you don't have to live with us for us to care and raech out and help," said Kandi.
Ridge wind and highland hills is inviting the community to help. If you know of an elderly person who needs a good meal and a little company or if you would like to help deliver the meals you can call the nearest emeritus community. One of their phone numbers is 208-237-3000.
