Grace Lutheran school student Sofie Borzadek was selected to be Mayor of Pocatello for the day. The contest which happens approximately every month requires students to write an essay about what they like and would like to change about Pocatello. The student is then able to shadow the mayor for that day. This means that Sofie was able to participate in meetings, meet the Who’s Who of Pocatello and see firsthand how decisions at the mayor’s office are made. Sofie said that she may consider running for political office someday, but for now she has three things that she would like to improve about Pocatello.
Miss Borzadek described what she would do to benefit Pocatello when she said, “Recycling and how we can improve the recycling program. And i wrote about maybe having bike lanes so people can bike to work and school and be more active and i wrote about better school lunches.”
Mayor Blad, who really enjoys this event each month described why it benefits him as well as the kids, “To actually see a hands-on experience it’s great for the kids and its honestly great for me, it keeps me young.”
