According to the Gallup Healthways Well-Being Index, Idahoans rank above average in overall well-being. This includes everything from life evaluation to work environment. Even though this is good, we still see many health problems throughout Idaho.
Most of the illnesses we face today are just a result of not living a healthy lifestyle. Things like heart disease, diabetes and cancer can be prevented easier than we think.
“You want to be able to live the life that you want to live, nobody wants to spend time in the hospital, it’s something you definitely want to avoid and there’s lots of lifestyle and dietary changes you can make, small changes you can make that can definitely put you in the right direction and it’s always about progress not perfection, so it’s very important to continue to strive to move forward” said Diabetes Education Coordinator at The Wellness Center, Valerie Chessin.
According to the Gallup Healthways Well-Being Index, Idahoans rank in the 67th percentile for overall well-being. While this is good, there’s always room for improvement.
“As far as exercise there’s really no magic pill, it’s just important to be very active, one program is not necessarily better than another program, exercise is very important to do every day for at least 30 minutes every day” continued Chessin.
As far as the diet goes, plant-based food is recommended as well as limiting animal products you consume.
If you have any questions or just need help getting started, EIRMC offers specific programs for specific needs.
“Our programs are designed to help people who are heading down perhaps a path of acquiring a new disease or developing diabetes, our programs are designed to help people stop that progression, revers, and move in a positive direction to prevent maybe additional medications or also to prevent a stay in the hospital” said Chessin.
