Google is stepping in to help family and friends of Boston Marathon runners find their loved ones after explosions near the finish line. The site, called Google Person Finder, allows users to enter the name of a person they're looking for or enter information about someone who is there. Cellphone use has been difficult in the Boston area. A law enforcement official says cell service was shut down to prevent any possible remote detonations of explosives. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing. Far-flung family members and friends are frantically using social media to check on the safety of runners and spectators after two bombs exploded near the finish line of the marathon, killing two and injuring dozens.
Upgrading will take a little longer if you're on Verizon Wireless. The country's largest cellphone carrier says it's extending the time it takes to earn a subsidized phone upgrade from 20 months on contract to 24 months. The move will save Verizon money, since it subsidizes each new smartphone by as much as $400 to get the price down to $199 or lower. With less frequent phone upgrades, it will pay out less in subsidies.
You can get a new iPhone 5 for as little as $200 with a contract, or up to 850 bucks for the top model on Apple's website. But a Hong Kong businessman may own the world's most-expensive smart-phone. The "Black Diamond iPhone 5". It’s a diamond and gold encrusted handset that includes a hidden 26-carat black diamond. The London jeweler commissioned to make the phone estimates its value at $15 million. It includes 600 "flawless" white diamonds, solid gold dressing, and an Apple logo made up of 53 diamonds. The "home" button on the front is made of black diamond -- an incredibly rare gem that had been in the phone owner's family for generations.
