Tech 2.0 for Monday, April 29, 2013
Google is trying to upstage Siri, the sometimes droll assistant that answers questions and helps people manage their lives on Apple's iPhone and iPad. The duel begins Monday with the release of a free iPhone and iPad app that features Google Now, a technology that performs many of the same functions as Siri. It's the first time that Google Now has been available on devices that aren't running on the latest version of Google Inc.'s Android software. The 9-month-old technology is part of an upgrade to Google's search application for iOS, the Apple Inc. software that powers the iPhone and iPad. Google Now's invasion of Siri's turf marks Google Inc.'s latest attempt to lure iPhone and iPad users away from a service that Apple built into its own devices.
Add the online deals service Living Social to the list of prominent Web sites that have been hacked. And because of it, the company suspects the personal data of more than 50 million customers may have been affected. The company sent advisories to all its customers Friday, asking them to change their passwords. The warnings are going out to its customers in most of the countries where it operates -- a possible sign that the hacking effects may be widespread. Living Social says because of the hack attack, customers' names, email addresses and dates of birth may have been exposed. At the same time, it says the database that stores customer credit-card information wasn't affected. Living Social says it's working with authorities to investigate the attack.
What if F. Scott Fitzgerald kept a blog and you could read it online? The author is long gone -- but his writings are coming to life with the release of a digital version of Fitzgerald's handwritten financial ledger. It's a record of all he wrote and what he did with it -- all in his own hand. The release comes just weeks before the opening of the movie "The Great Gatsby" -- the most famous of his many novels.
