These days, most airlines do business with computers. And when those computers go down, things go badly. That was the case for American Airlines Tuesday -- after a huge meltdown of its computer system. The airline and its sister carrier American Eagle canceled 970 flights and delayed more than one thousand more because airline workers lost access to their computer system. The system is used for everything from issuing boarding passes to figuring out how much fuel to pump into its planes. In turn, the computer glitch caused passengers to take to social media to criticize American, which is planning to merge with US Airways and become the world's biggest carrier.

Update: Google's mail services have been restored and the company is not comenting on the outage.

Google's mail and application services were unavailable to some users Wednesday morning. The company says it's investigating the problems, but doesn't know their cause. Google's apps status dashboard shows that its Mail, Drive file storage service and office-application services were "disrupted." Its administrator control panel, which lets companies manage their Google applications, went completely down. The disruptions started affecting people worldwide around 8:00 a.m. Eastern time. Google Inc. says it's "working hard to restore normal operation."

Yahoo is making more money under CEO Marissa Mayer, even as the Internet company struggles to sell more of the ads that bring in most of its revenue. The latest signs of earnings progress came Tuesday with the release of Yahoo's first-quarter earnings report. The numbers also show further signs of decay in Yahoo's sales of display ads. On the plus side, Yahoo's ad revenue tied to search results rose. Yahoo Inc. earned $390 million, or 35 cents per share, during the first three months of the year.

If you have a mom who likes smartphones -- and the color purple -- you may have caught a break for a gift for Mother's Day. Sprint is offering a new version of its Samsung Galaxy S III in a fetching Amethyst Purple. The purple color is only for the 16-gigabyte version of the phone. Sprint has also dropped the price of the 16 gig version of the Galaxy S III. It's now $99 with a new line or eligible upgrade and a two-year commitment to Sprint service. There is also a way to get the phone for free -- provided you're a new customer who ports their number from another carrier.
