We’ve all probably seen how rough middle school can be sometimes…not only is it where many kids hit puberty but also where many influences from the drug and alcohol world start to creep in.

Well the Idaho Falls Kiwanis Club is presenting their Service Youth Award to two men who have gone above and beyond to influence the lives of these children in a positive way.

The two recipients of this years’ Service to Youth Award are D.A.R.E. officers Kevin Pettingill and Ken Zaugg.

The two men work together in elementary schools and middle schools in district 91.

“It’s very humbling, you know you go about your business everyday trying to do your best and then when somebody does recognize something that you do it’s a very special moment, and it was, it was a very big surprise and a very unique moment that was really special” said Pettingill.

“It’s quite special really because a lot of times we just do it without being recognized and that’s not really why we’re here, we’re here for the kids because we care about the kids in our community and went them to succeed in life” said Zaugg.

The men work closely with 6th graders to teach them about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. They then help the kids set goals for their lives.

“A long time ago a friend of mine told me a little saying that in a hundred years from now it won’t matter how much money you make or where you live or possibly even your job, but it will make a difference in a child’s life of the time you spend with them at that particular moment that might change destinies” continued Pettingill.

Pettingill has been a D.A.R.E. officer for 23 years and Zaugg has been with D.A.R.E. for 14.
